UNR Residential Life, Housing and Food Service

Safety and Security

Dear Parents and Student Residents

Welcome to the residence halls at the University of Nevada, Reno. The Department of Residential Life, Housing and Food Service prides itself in providing a safe and secure environment for our residents. While we offer information, facility enhancements, and staff to assist in ensuring a safe and secure environment, the ultimate responsibility for your safety most often depends upon your own actions. Dangerous behavior or poor choices can place your personal safety or property at risk. When residents circumvent supplied safety devices and established security procedures they place all residents at risk. To help protect yourself and your property, please take advantage of the services and programs we offer. More information on personal safety and security is available here: http://www.reslife.unr.edu/policies.html

While situated near the center of the twenty-four hours a day activity in the Reno / Sparks area, the University of Nevada, Reno campus is by in large a safe place. Most crime that occurs on campus relates to the theft of property, and most property thefts are preventable. Many new residents arrive at the residence halls unaware their property or safety is at risk. This information is included here not to frighten anyone, but instead to inform new residents so they will be less likely to become victims of crime. Residents can help protect themselves by taking simple steps to protect themselves and their property. For further information and details concerning crime on the university campus, please visit the web site for University Police Services.

As facilities of a state institution, all local and state laws are in effect and enforced within the residence halls. This includes those laws relating to the possession and consumption of alcohol by underage individuals. Please take the time to become familiar with these and other applicable laws to avoid potential problems. Handbooks and the department web site both contain department policies relating to community living in the residence halls. Violations of residence hall policies are treated seriously, and may ultimately result in the imposition of sanctions as outlined in the housing conduct process. For more information, the handbook can be viewed at: http://www.reslife.unr.edu/handbook.html

Our department has a staff of students, full time state employees, and professional administrative faculty on duty or available twenty-four hours a day. Please feel free to contact any of our staff should you have any questions or concerns. Once again, we welcome all our new and returning residents to our facilities, and with your help, we look forward to having another safe and secure academic year in the residence halls.
